Textile Landscapes
look at this book for discussion on markmaking using our surroundings.
Making a Mark
"The creation of art is based on a series of choices that executes your intention...Having too many materials can hinder the decisions you make." 'It is the marks and colours you choose that will add expression and meaning... collage materials are more strongly determined in their 'identity and carry inherited meanings.'
'What type of mark will represent the textures and patterns you encounter most accurately?'
Holmes suggests using more neutral colours or black and white in initial explorations to get to grips with the textures and patterns you make. Decide on what materials are easily used- consider collage materials and their inherited meanings.
Things to Try
- Reminded of mono-printing, an easy enough technique but realized needs ink, maybe I could find a DIY version.
- Non- soluble wax or fabric crayons applied to cloth before painting will act as a 'resist' to dyes or inks added on the top.
- Crease, fold, and stitch surfaces before applying paint or dye, to create areas of resist where the colour will absorb less.
Connecting with The Landscape
"Short, walks and hikes with broader horizons allow us to see how vast the landscape is ant to experience the structures, shapes, and moods of its changes."
Highlighted in my walk, it will be interesting to look at the article on walking during lockdown, what does the news teach us?- does it correspond with my thoughts?
"Visiting exhibitions, reading and sometimes just sitting and observing, are useful activities, providing plenty of stimulus for the artist."
Paths and Mapping
This title and the images got me to think about: view and the ideas of drawing surroundings: house, roads, nearest shop, nearest park or favorite place in regards to where you live.
Reading the text: "The activity of marking a journey can be physical or imagined" 'marking our journeys and activities', 'humans make their presence felt'
The idea of 'Travel Diaries'
what it entails---- 'small portable travel diary working quickly and fluidly, my interest lies in the perception of my immediate surroundings
