Illustration Artists
After the workshop, I continued to make drawings for my illustrations and looked at these following artists from The House of Illustration Exhibition as well as Theresa Rowe who I found interesting for her use of colour in her work. To understand a bit about why they included the artefacts and what they connote, I had a look look into 'who they are' and their interests.
Clark grew up in the middle of flat countryside where there was little to do. To entertain herself she would make things: houses, clothes for her animals, pictures and books- these are included among the scene- there is a cat, picture and book. Clark presents these interests put together in a scene.
Penate incorporates all of his favourites using texture and pattern. The use of labelling and abstract patterns makes the viewer question what they are seeing. The Shabu-shabu (meat) for instance at first seemed to me like material, and a paper airplane above it, before reading what it actually was.
I want to use this design idea to create an illustration. I like the idea for the composition; I hope to adjust the proportions a bit. I think the connection between car and music sign is not clear-it makes it seem like I like I drive which I do not. To correct it I would create a trail of notes between the two to link the idea of driving with music. I think it will be interesting, I could play around with texture like Penate and possibly copy each of the elements and play around with repetition and layers to create a background.
With an interest in mountaineering Fern’s work as an artist is focused on the landscape of the Vercors
region of south-east France. This subject is at the centre of the piece as silhouettes of rugged plateaus
and mountains, painted with earthy colours to make it more distinct.
Rowe is an illustrator that uses screen printing in her practice; her work spotlights colour, shape.
I think the way each is displayed is equally as effective each other as they all reveal their interests whether labelled, put together or in sections. This is because the images are clear, so how they are arranged is up how the artist wants to present their relationship.
