Sculpting Metal Workshop- Line and Movement

The objective of this workshop was to create test pieces that explore and/or communicate line and movement. We would also get to learn about and test new equipment and materials, working in 3D to create abstract pieces to experiment and build and try new ways of working. We were also encouraged to work in a practice of doing what comes to mind just like our practical 'Cut & Construct' task.

To create lines and build movement we used the motion of tools by swinging, rolling, dragging, flipping and throwing, as a base for our drawings. I started by using the weight of a hammer to copy its swinging action by following the end, and followed a similar operation of viewing the motion of the other objects: a roll of tape and pair of pliers.

My first piece was this tin sheet sculpture. I started by cutting strips so I could recreate the lines from the pliers' movement. After I had the strips I thought about how I could bend them. I put a few of them in the clamp machine to make jagged corners, after realising that it didn't fit with my drawings I decided that I could use some of the configurations from being scattered on the table, stand them up and experiment piecing the sharp lines together but keeping them angular to create movement.

In attempt to create some of the spiral shapes from the swinging hammer drawings I wrapped a steel rod around a former. I thought I could then bend it and alter its shape but I wrapped the coil too tight. In attempt to flatten its shape, I tried pressing it in the clamp but this didn't work too well.

After my first piece I came back to this and instead built around it to balance out the tight loop- with the flowing lines of the swinging hammer.

I wanted to follow my drawings more and so to play around with the polystyrene I decided to produce the round shapes to layer. I couldn't find pieces of polystyrene with the same width I wanted so I began to see how I could use the segments fitted together. I like the idea of this piece, I think I could make this more balanced adding similar pieces and following my drawings more. I find it hard to separate the continue line into shapes so I intend to re-draw the individual shapes will help me to identify them, I find this hard to do with the continuous line.

Again aiming to transform my drawings to 3D, I picked this piece which I like for its's visible layers and interesting form. I decided to use a mix of materials so that I could create a platform and different density lines to add to the layered effect. This time I found it easier to see the drawing in its induvial segments and enjoyed using them and its outcome.
To achieve the movement effect in the drawing I would intertwine the next layer with these two.
